Job Description

Job Title: Integrated Photonics Design Manager. Location: Broomfield, CO, USA or Albuquerque, NM, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of engineers and scientists responsible for conceptualizing and executing photonic integrated circuit (PIC) designs and development for quantum computing systems.
  • Collaborate with technical staff to develop photonic roadmaps, technology development plans, and advanced R&D activities.
  • Guide and coordinate optical R&D efforts from initial concepts through design validation for multi-year photonic projects.
  • Mentor, coach, and train direct-reporting engineers and scientists while supporting their career development;
  • Implement R&D best practices and processes to ensure quality requirements are met.
  • Identify technologies, innovations, infrastructure, projects, and resources needed to improve photonic design and development capabilities.
  • Lead recruitment and retention efforts for high-performing technical PIC design staff.
  • Communicate technical and organizational information clearly and effectively between technical and management teams.
  • Actively listen to team members and strengthen collaboration across the organization.
  • Lead integrated photonic designs through requirements definition, design, layout, fabrication, and testing;
  • Support engineering trade studies and communicate with other disciplines to develop technical roadmaps and solutions.
  • Help improve PIC design tools, infrastructure, development processes, and overall design quality.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • At least 8 years of industry experience developing and designing photonic integrated circuit solutions.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing technical teams;
  • Must qualify as a U.S. Person under contractual requirements, including U.S. citizenship, permanent residency or green card status, or qualifying asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to U.S. Government national security requirements, candidates cannot be nationals of the People’s Republic of China or Russia unless they are also U.S. citizens.

Preferred:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Photonics, Optics, Applied Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience taking photonics design projects from concept through production.
  • Experience with photonic simulation tools such as Lumerical, Tidy3D, RSoft, or similar guided-mode and FDTD solvers.
  • Experience with photonic layout tools such as KLayout, GDSFactory, or similar platforms.
  • At least 4 years of experience designing photonic waveguides, splitters, couplers, gratings, and/or active photonic components.
  • At least 4 years of experience leading integrated photonic designs across requirements, design, layout, fabrication, and testing.
  • Experience managing teams across multiple geographic locations;
  • Experience with photonic integrated circuit fabrication and testing processes and tools.
  • Knowledge of photonic materials, their behavior, and metrology.
  • Experience developing PIC design tools and infrastructure to improve development speed and quality.
  • Experience conducting engineering trade studies and communicating solutions across multiple technical disciplines.
  • Experience working with wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR).

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Annual salary of $180,000 to $225,000.
  • Compensation range includes the target bonus for this incentive-eligible position.
