Job Description
Job Title: Senior Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) Design Engineer. Location: Broomfield, CO, USA or Albuquerque, NM, USA
Responsibilities:
- Participate in a team of physicists and optical engineers developing commercial and research systems for quantum computing.
- Design and develop integrated photonic components and systems for delivering and manipulating light across the spectrum.
- Collaborate with architecture, physics, photonics, fabrication, and mechanical engineering teams to define system requirements.
- Gather technical requirements, translate them into actionable plans, and ensure components and systems meet required performance specifications.
- Design novel integrated photonic components to meet challenging technical specifications;
- Layout test PICs and work closely with fabrication and testing teams to validate photonic component performance.
- Lead and collaborate with the PIC development team and external vendors to ensure timely development and delivery of key demonstrators.
- Support photonic design, fabrication, testing, and system development activities.
- Apply optical principles and practices to solve technical challenges.
- Analyze, plot, fit, and interpret data from optical testing experiments.
- Work across disciplines to develop and deliver solutions for quantum computing systems.
- Lead and mentor small teams where appropriate.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or higher required.
- At least 6 years of experience, including advanced degree experience, in photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design.
- Experience using photonic simulation tools such as Lumerical, RSoft, or similar guided-mode and FDTD solvers.
- Experience with PIC layout tools such as KLayout, GDSFactory, or similar software;
- At least 4 years of experience, including advanced degree experience, using and maintaining optical or photonic systems.
- Must qualify as a U.S. Person under contractual requirements. This includes U.S. citizens, permanent residents or green card holders, and workers granted asylum or refugee status.
- Due to U.S. Government national security requirements, candidates cannot be nationals of the People's Republic of China or Russia unless they are also U.S. citizens.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Optics, Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with design-for-manufacturing.
- Experience with photonics fabrication processes and metrology.
- Experience with materials used in visible photonic circuits and optics.
- Experience developing photonic products involving PIC design, fabrication, and/or packaging;
- Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams spanning architecture, physics, fabrication, mechanical engineering, and photonics.
- Experience leading and mentoring small teams.
- Broad understanding of optical principles and practices.
- Programming experience in MATLAB, Python, or C.
- Experience with optical testing and data analysis, including collecting, plotting, analyzing, fitting, and interpreting experimental data.

- Annual salary range of $148,000 to $185,000.
