Ion Transport and Trap Design Physicist

Job Description

Job Title: Ion Transport and Trap Design Physicist - 714. Location: Broomfield, CO / Brooklyn Park, MN / Albuquerque, NM / Remote (US)

Job Type: Full-time, On-site (remote work may be possible with approval)

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on advanced ion trap transport methods and surface-electrode ion trap design.
  • Design and develop ion surface trap voltage waveforms to enable efficient ion transport.
  • Create and maintain software tools and workflows for ion transport and trap design;
  • Collaborate directly with computational scientists, experimentalists, and engineers to develop solutions related to ion transport and trap design.
  • Communicate research findings internally and externally through publications and presentations.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in applied physics, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Experience with software management and collaboration tools.
  • Skilled in organizing and maintaining software projects or packages.
  • Hands-on experience working with trapped ions;
  • Knowledge of applying physical principles to optimization problems or numerical simulations.
  • Familiarity with numerical optimization techniques such as convex optimization.
  • Experience designing ion traps using electrostatic simulation and optimization methods.
  • Experience configuring and analyzing BEM (Boundary Element Method) and/or FEM (Finite Element Method) problems.
  • Excellent teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills, including published research results;
  • Must meet U.S. Person and national security requirements: U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or refugee/asylee status.

Preferred:

  • Experience with high-fidelity quantum hardware experiments or integrated software-hardware systems.
  • Prior publications or contributions in ion trap design or related quantum hardware research.
