Job Description
Job Title: Quantum Hardware Modeling - Research Scientist. Location: Yorktown Heights, New York, United States
Responsibilities:
- Design, simulate, and lay out the next generation of IBM Quantum processors.
- Develop new processor technologies focused on improving performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Invent and model novel quantum processor technologies, including:
- New gates that connect qubits across a quantum chip.
- Inter-chip entangling gates.
- Advanced qubit readout schemes.
- Novel qubit reset mechanisms.
- Design, simulate, and lay out test devices for evaluating new quantum hardware concepts.
- Work closely with experimental teams to test and evaluate the performance of new processor technologies.
- Use experimental results to refine and advance proposed hardware innovations;
- Integrate successful innovations into future generations of IBM Quantum processors.
- Apply quantum computing theory, device physics, optimal control, and experimental physics to develop new hardware concepts.
- Work on multi-qubit gate optimization, quantum transduction, and decoherence mechanisms;
- Contribute to IBM Research's efforts to advance practical and large-scale quantum computing.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Deep understanding of quantum computing theory, including quantum error correction, quantum algorithms, and quantum device physics.
- Extensive knowledge of quantum hardware and device design.
- Knowledge of optimal control theory and quantum experimentation;
- Expertise in experimental physics, including low-noise cryogenic amplifiers.
- Experience simulating quantum systems and physical systems.
- Advanced understanding of quantum operations, including multi-qubit gates, quantum transduction, and decoherence mechanisms.
- Experience designing and simulating superconducting quantum processors.
- Experience with microwave simulation software.
Preferred:
- PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience measuring superconducting qubits.
- Additional research experience in superconducting quantum processor design, modeling, or experimental validation.

- Projected annual salary range of $180,000 to $220,000.
