Research Intern: Scalable Fabrication of Superconducting

Job Description

Job Title: Research Intern: Scalable Fabrication of Superconducting Quantum Devices. Location: Berkeley, CA, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate superconducting qubits and Josephson tunnel junctions in a cleanroom environment.
  • Prepare, edit, and verify CAD layout files.
  • Develop and optimize lithography processes.
  • Operate and assist with plasma etching processes, including ICP and RIE.
  • Perform electrical and structural characterization of fabricated structures.
  • Analyze fabrication data to identify process trends and improve yield and uniformity;
  • Document experimental procedures, process results, and design iterations.
  • Collaborate with scientists and process engineers to improve the scalability and reproducibility of superconducting qubit fabrication.
  • Support the design and fabrication of superconducting quantum devices.
  • Contribute to process development and device development for scalable quantum integrated circuits.
  • Measure fabricated devices and compare results to inform fabrication process development.

Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience working in a semiconductor or nanofabrication cleanroom.
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more lithography techniques, including photolithography or electron-beam lithography.
  • Demonstrated experience with dry etching techniques such as ICP and RIE.
  • Experience with CAD layouts using GDSII-based tools such as KLayout, LayoutEditor, Cadence, L-Edit, or similar software.
  • Strong experimental skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a fast-paced research environment.

Preferred:

  • Current or previous membership with the Marvell Nanolab cleanroom at UC Berkeley.
  • Experience with AlOx Josephson junctions.
  • Academic or technical training in electrical engineering, materials science, physics, or a related field.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Hourly compensation of $35 to $50.
  • Undergraduate students generally receive $35 per hour.
  • Master's students generally receive $45 per hour.
  • Graduate-level students generally receive $50 per hour.
  • Housing stipend of up to $2,000 for candidates who relocate for the summer;
  • Hands-on experience with the complete fabrication workflow for superconducting quantum circuits.
  • Experience with device layout, nanofabrication, microscopy, and process optimization.
  • Opportunity to work alongside experienced researchers developing scalable fabrication technologies for quantum integrated circuits.

Other Information:

  • The position is based at the Marvell Nanolab cleanroom at UC Berkeley and is on-site.
  • The intern will work closely with Rigetti scientists and engineers on superconducting qubit fabrication.
  • Rigetti designs and manufactures quantum processor chips in-house at Fab-1.
