Job Description
Job Title: Senior Research Scientist, Quantum Error Correction. Location: Los Angeles / San Francisco (Hybrid)
This role involves designing and implementing quantum algorithms and workflows, translating research into high-impact software solutions, and collaborating across research and engineering teams; You will help advance Q-CTRL’s products while contributing to cutting-edge publications and conferences.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement methods to address key challenges in real quantum computers.
- Conduct innovative research in QEC, including designing and optimizing decoders, computation architectures, and logical operation schemes.
- Apply techniques from control theory, optimization, machine learning, computer science, and data analysis.
- Develop and deploy solutions in the Q-CTRL product suite;
- Build high-quality research code using tools like Qiskit, Python, NumPy, Networkx, SciPy, Scikit-learn, and PyTorch.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to translate research into production-quality software.
- Publish high-impact papers and present at top conferences;
- Explain complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences and incorporate feedback effectively.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related discipline.
- Industry or postdoctoral experience in quantum error correction; strong track record of QEC research considered.
- Expertise in leading QEC codes such as surface codes and qLDPC codes.
- Experience in decoders, compilation, or computation architectures;
- Proven ability to conduct impactful research through publications or presentations.
- Experience developing software for scientific experiments using Python.
Preferred:
- Experience with high-performance languages such as Rust, C++, or Julia.
- Knowledge of control theory, optimization, machine learning, or data analysis.
- Familiarity with error suppression techniques: dynamical decoupling, readout mitigation, zero-noise extrapolation, Pauli twirling, or pulse-level optimization.
- Familiarity with executing circuits in Qiskit.
- Experience with hardware such as FPGAs or ASICs;
- Strong scientific communication skills and experience in teaching, outreach, or presenting.
- Track record in winning research contracts or grants.
Salary & Benefits:
- Base salary: $135,000 - $192,000, depending on skills, experience, and location.
