Senior Quantum Engineer - Readout Design

Job Description

Job Title: Principal or Senior Quantum Engineer - Readout Design. Location: Redmond, Washington, USA

Job Type: Full-Time, Individual Contributor, Hybrid (3 days/week in-office)

Responsibilities:

  • Design scalable readout circuitry for topological qubits.
  • Design the readout system for topological qubits at the component, subsystem, and system levels.
  • Interface across teams to co-design the readout system alongside evolving qubit designs and control requirements.
  • Make effective use of Microsoft’s internal technical expertise and engineering capabilities.
  • Document technical work and analyze, interpret, and present simulation results.
  • Present work to customers and network with peers when opportunities arise;
  • Use engineering best practices to develop tools and processes that enable progress in quantum research.
  • Incorporate useful techniques and help develop tools that support internal and external users.
  • Work as part of fast-paced, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Uphold safety standards and practices, including compliance with applicable policies and safety requirements.
  • Escalate safety issues with appropriate urgency and assist in defining and implementing safety protocols.
  • Contribute to Microsoft’s culture and values through collaboration, innovation, respect, integrity, and accountability.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 1 year of industry or research and development experience, including postdoctoral research experience; OR
  • Master’s Degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 4 years of industry or research and development experience; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 6 years of industry or research and development experience; OR
  • Equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements;
  • Ability to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Ability to satisfy citizenship or status verification requirements for access to export-controlled information under applicable regulations, including ITAR, EAR, EU Dual Use Regulation, or other export control requirements.
  • Ability to leverage AI tools to drive innovation and efficiency in areas such as measurement, performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, and task automation.
  • Ability to work effectively in an AI-first environment using modern AI tools to accelerate hardware development and discovery.

Preferred:

  • Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 3 years of industry experience; OR
  • Master’s Degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 6 years of industry or research and development experience; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 8 years of industry experience.
  • Experience with semiconductor devices or spins in semiconductors.
  • Experience with cryogenic microwave experiments and low-noise amplifiers.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • For Quantum Engineering IC4 roles, the typical U.S. base salary range is $119,800 to $234,700 per year.
  • For eligible San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area locations, the IC4 range is $160,200 to $261,000 per year.
  • For Quantum Engineering IC5 roles, the typical U.S. base salary range is $142,800 to $274,800 per year.
  • For eligible San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area locations, the IC5 range is $188,000 to $304,200 per year.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for additional benefits and compensation.
