Software Engineer, Back-end (Boulder Opal)

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Software Engineer, Back-end (Boulder Opal). Location: Los Angeles, California, United States (Hybrid)

This role involves working closely with engineering, research, product, design, and infrastructure teams to transform advanced research into production-ready software.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and optimize scalable backend applications using Python
• Build high-efficiency service-to-service communication systems using modern protocols
• Collaborate with researchers to convert advanced research code into production systems
• Apply engineering best practices while bridging research and software development
• Partner with product, frontend, and infrastructure teams to deliver end-to-end features
• Develop reusable and scalable system architectures across multiple use cases;
• Implement efficient algorithms, statistical models, and large-scale data pipelines
• Perform other duties aligned with skills and experience

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with Python, Rust, C++, or similar languages
• Strong problem-solving skills and proactive, ownership-driven mindset
• Proven ability to collaborate across research and engineering teams
• Experience designing and implementing scalable systems and efficient algorithms

Preferred:

• Hands-on experience with modern APIs (gRPC, GraphQL, REST)
• Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and infrastructure management
• Familiarity with Python web frameworks like Django, Flask, or FastAPI
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, CircleCI);
• Knowledge of container orchestration tools like Kubernetes
• Experience with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Tempo, AWS CloudWatch)
• Exposure to data orchestration and warehousing tools (Airflow, Snowflake, dbt)

Benefits and Compensation:

• Base salary: $135,000 – $210,000 (dependent on skills, experience, level, and location)
