Job Description
Job Title: Senior Applied Scientist, Superconducting Digital and Cryogenic Control Electronics. Location: San Francisco, CA, USA
Responsibilities:
- Design and simulate superconducting digital circuits and cryogenic control and readout electronics for scalable quantum processors.
- Develop and validate Josephson-junction circuit models, timing and margin analyses, and verification methods for superconducting digital designs.
- Evaluate system-level trade-offs involving wiring count, power dissipation across cryogenic stages, latency, and physical footprint.
- Communicate recommendations based on system-level evaluations of candidate control architectures;
- Co-design control interfaces with qubit-device teams so that control electronics and quantum devices are developed as an integrated system.
- Carry designs from concept through simulation, layout, design review, and fabrication handoff.
- Deliver tapeout-ready layouts and verification reports through established design-request and design-review processes.
- Present research results internally and, where appropriate, publish findings in peer-reviewed venues.
- Contribute to the development of technologies that enable scaling of quantum processors, including alternative processor architectures, superconducting qubit packaging, and cryogenic control electronics.
- Collaborate with the quantum processor design team and participate in shared design and review processes.
Qualifications:
- PhD, or a Master's degree with 7+ years of applied research experience.
- Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or a related language.
- Experience with patents or publications in top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
- Experience with circuit design and simulation;
- Familiarity with superconducting qubit control and readout, including pulse generation, multiplexed readout, and feedback latency requirements.
- Experience designing superconducting digital circuits such as RSFQ, ERSFQ, adiabatic quantum phase parametron, or related single-flux-quantum logic families.
- Experience with Josephson-junction circuit simulation and margin analysis.
- Experience with EDA workflows for custom circuit design, including schematic capture, layout, physical verification, and working with a process design kit.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of cryogenic electronics, including cryo-CMOS, low-temperature amplifiers and mixers, and thermal and power budgeting across refrigerator stages.
- Experience with microwave engineering and signal integrity in dense cryogenic interconnects.
- Experience taking chips through fabrication and correlating measured circuit behavior with design models.
- Familiarity with quantum error correction decoding and the classical-processing requirements it creates for control systems.
Benefits and Compensation:
- Base salary: $192,200 to $260,000 per year for the San Francisco, CA location.
- Compensation may also include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs).
- Final compensation depends on experience, qualifications, and location.
- Medical, dental, vision, and prescription health insurance;
- Basic Life and AD&D insurance, with supplemental life insurance options.
- Employee Assistance Program and mental health support.
- Medical advice line and Flexible Spending Accounts.
- Adoption and surrogacy reimbursement coverage.
- 401(k) matching.
- Paid time off.
- Parental leave.
