Integration/API architect

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Integration/API Architect. Location: Palo Alto, California, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Design and scale the integration architecture connecting photonic IC (PIC), passive IC, and active IC design toolchains.
  • Develop and deploy software for test systems, product platforms, and manufacturing data management.
  • Design and standardize APIs to enable interoperability between EDA tools, in-house photonic solvers, PDK infrastructure, and CI/CD systems.
  • Build and maintain middleware and adapters for commercial and proprietary engineering tools with inconsistent or limited APIs.
  • Define and implement API versioning, schema validation, and backward compatibility strategies;
  • Develop observability and traceability solutions, including logging, metrics, and data lineage tracking to ensure reproducibility and auditability.
  • Collaborate with device, layout, and simulation engineers to translate engineering requirements into scalable software platforms.
  • Design canonical data models that preserve design intent and traceability from schematic through layout, verification, extraction, and tape-out.
  • Support automation, reproducibility, and secure integration across photonic IC design workflows.
  • Work closely with cross-functional software and hardware engineering teams in a fast-paced startup environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience with significant exposure to systems integration or platform architecture.
  • Proven experience designing and managing APIs using REST, gRPC, and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with data interchange formats such as Protocol Buffers, Avro, or similar technologies.
  • Experience integrating with enterprise data platforms such as Databricks, Tableau, or similar.
  • Strong programming skills in Python;
  • Proficiency in at least one backend or systems programming language such as Go, C++, Java, Rust, or similar.
  • Experience integrating proprietary and commercial engineering tools with inconsistent APIs.
  • Experience defining canonical data models and managing schema evolution and versioning.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD systems, Docker, Kubernetes, or equivalent orchestration platforms.
  • Experience implementing logging, monitoring, and observability for distributed systems;
  • Strong understanding of software architecture principles including scalability, modularity, loose coupling, and reliability.
  • Experience working in engineering-intensive domains such as EDA, semiconductor design, hardware engineering, or scientific computing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead multiple priorities while working independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated interest in quantum computing.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with photonic IC design environments.
  • Experience with semiconductor or EDA toolchains.
  • Familiarity with GitLab-based CI/CD workflows;
  • Experience with optical modeling, electromagnetic simulation, process modeling, or packaging co-design.
  • Experience supporting silicon validation workflows.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Base salary:
    • U.S. Range: $165,000 to $185,000 per year.
    • Bay Area Range: $180,000 to $200,000 per year.
  • Eligible for equity as part of the total compensation package.
