PsiQuantum is a US company building a fault-tolerant quantum computer using light and silicon to solve real-world problems.
About
At PsiQuantum, they conduct quantum calculations using photonic qubits, or particles of light. This method is advantageous because their systems can function at room temperature, which is a stark difference from other platforms that operate in ultra-cold environments. The company’s chips are produced using standard silicon photonics, which is already applied in contemporary electronics. To scale production, they partner with GlobalFoundries, a major semiconductor manufacturer. Their 300 mm CMOS facility makes them one of the few quantum companies, that are able to use industrial-grade tools.
PsiQuantum focuses on creating a fault-tolerant quantum computer intended to operate with approximately one million qubits. In their view, this level of scale would be crucial for addressing real world challenges; including advanced drug and chemical engineering, as well as sophisticated optimization tasks. With over $750 million in funding, including investments from BlackRock and grants from both the US and Australian governments, Company seeks to deliver a functional quantum computer within the decade.
