Job Title: Senior Quantum Measurement Engineer. Location: Redmond, Washington, United States
Responsibilities:
- Design and conduct experiments to characterize the radio frequency (RF) and transport properties of semiconductors, dielectrics, metals, and superconductors for qubit development.
- Apply advanced measurement techniques to improve quantum devices and measurement practices.
- Identify opportunities to streamline and automate quantum measurement processes, including the use of artificial intelligence where appropriate.
- Collaborate with experts in materials science, microwave engineering, and quantum device physics to improve device performance;
- Use AI tools to improve efficiency in performance modeling, data analysis, research, and routine task automation.
- Design and develop AI agents or copilots to support experiment setup, log analysis, measurement report generation, protocol templates, and knowledge retrieval from instrument manuals and design documents.
- Demonstrate Microsoft's culture and values through collaboration, accountability, integrity, and continuous learning.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field, with at least 6 years of industry or research and development experience; or
- Master's degree in a relevant field, with at least 4 years of industry or research and development experience; or
- Doctorate in a relevant field, with at least 1 year of industry or research and development experience; or equivalent experience;
- Ability to use AI tools to improve research, engineering workflows, and productivity.
- Ability to meet Microsoft's security screening requirements.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with at least 8 years of industry or research and development experience; or
- Master's degree in a relevant field with at least 6 years of experience; or
- Doctorate in a relevant field with at least 3 years of experience; or equivalent experience.
- At least 8 years of experimental experience with cryogenic RF characterization of semiconductors, dielectrics, metals, and/or superconductors, including PhD experience;
- At least 8 years of experience with data acquisition, programming in a high-level language such as Python or MATLAB, and version control tools such as Git, including PhD experience.
- At least 8 years of hands-on experience operating cryostats at 4 K and below.
- Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and design of experiments (DoE).
Benefits and Compensation:
- United States base salary: $119,800 to $234,700 per year.
- San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area: $160,200 to $261,000 per year.
