Software Engineer, Back-end (Compiler)

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Software Engineer, Back-end (Compiler). Location: Los Angeles, California

You will maintain and evolve the compiler stack that translates OpenQASM3 and OpenPulse programs into low-level instructions for quantum controllers; This role connects high-level quantum programming with physical execution on QPUs.

You will work closely with product, research, infrastructure, and frontend teams to deliver reliable, production-ready quantum software solutions.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and optimize scalable backend services using Python
• Maintain and improve the compiler stack that translates OpenQASM3 and OpenPulse into controller-level instructions
• Collaborate with researchers and quantum engineers to convert experimental requirements into production code
• Debug real-world quantum execution challenges on hardware;
• Validate compiler outputs through hands-on experiments with QPUs
• Deliver efficient service-to-service communication using protocols such as gRPC, GraphQL, and REST
• Help define software architecture, tools, and engineering standards for next-generation quantum control systems
• Perform other related duties based on skills and experience

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
• At least 5 years of backend software development experience using Python;
• Experience with quantum hardware control systems or pulse-level programming such as OpenQASM3 or similar frameworks
• Familiarity with Python web frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI

Preferred:

• Knowledge of compiler theory, parser design such as LL or PEG parsers, or ecosystems like LLVM or MLIR
• Experience building Python extension modules using systems languages such as C++ or Rust
• Exposure to FPGA programming, low-latency systems, or real-time systems

Salary and Compensation:

• Base salary range: 135,000 USD to 210,000 USD
• Final compensation depends on skills, experience, level, and location
