Engineer Manager - Tooling Team

Job Description

Job Title: Software Engineer Manager - Tooling Team. Location: Yorktown Heights, New York, United States

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the local tooling software engineering team within IBM Research.
  • Establish and maintain an agile, high-performance software engineering practice.
  • Manage different components of a complex software ecosystem;
  • Foster a strong software engineering culture and proactively address internal team challenges and conflicts.
  • Build strong and seamless collaboration with quantum experiment subject matter experts.
  • Contribute to technical strategy and architectural decisions across frontend and backend systems.
  • Provide technical leadership for complex software projects and systems.
  • Support effective collaboration across teams and stakeholders.
  • Spend time with teams and clients in the workplace at least three days per week, subject to business needs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a people manager in software engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in project management.
  • At least 5 years of technical leadership experience managing complex software.
  • Background in software engineering or a comparable technical field.
  • Hands-on experience and strong understanding of system programming.
  • Hands-on experience and strong understanding of cloud architectures.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills;
  • Ability to cultivate psychologically safe team environments.
  • Ability to enable direct feedback among team members.
  • Strong stakeholder expectation management skills.
  • Strategic mindset combined with the ability to execute hands-on.
  • Exposure to or interest in quantum computing is considered a plus.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree.
  • Experience implementing team performance frameworks such as DORA metrics.
  • Experience applying management and communication methodologies such as radical candor or non-violent communication.
  • Experience working with Rust.
  • Experience working with Python.
  • Experience working with JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Experience working with Node.js.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Projected annual salary range of $234,000 to $300,000.

  • Work arrangement: Onsite.
  • Travel: Up to 20%, approximately one day per week.

  • Visa sponsorship: IBM will not provide visa sponsorship now or in the future. Candidates must be able to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.
  • The compensation range is based on a full-time schedule for a full calendar year and may vary according to job-related skills, experience, and location.
