Job Title: Senior Engineer, System Calibration (Electro-Optics). Location: Milpitas, California, United States
Responsibilities:
- Own and drive the end-to-end calibration strategy for electro-optic subsystems, from early concept through system integration and deployment.
- Focus calibration strategies on system uptime, scalability, repeatability, and operational efficiency.
- Consolidate and structure calibration and operational information for components and sub-assemblies involving electro-optic devices.
- Lead system-level calibration risk analysis and mitigation planning across hardware, firmware, and software interfaces.
- Develop requirements for hardware, firmware, and software teams to meet uptime and performance targets;
- Own and optimize calibration strategies against system uptime requirements.
- Develop modeling and analytical tools to understand how component-level electro-optic calibrations behave and interact when integrated into the full system.
- Track estimated and actual calibration times to model system uptime and identify areas requiring optimization.
- Prototype calibration procedures on benchtop setups.
- Specify test requirements to validate and de-risk calibrations at different levels of integration testing.
- Write control software to implement calibration procedures within the software stack.
- Lead ad-hoc cross-functional working groups to develop and refine high-risk calibration procedures;
- Work with other system calibration engineers and software engineering teams to integrate calibrations into executable routines.
- Provide system-level validation support, including system-level context, debugging, and root-cause analysis during prototyping and integration.
- Identify and de-risk critical calibration dependencies early in development.
- Reduce calibration time and minimize the impact of calibration on system uptime.
- Develop robust, automated calibration routines that integrate cleanly with the system software stack.
- Establish scalable calibration frameworks to support high-availability quantum computing systems.
Qualifications:
- M.S. with 5+ years of industry experience, or Ph.D. with 3+ years of industry experience, in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
- Experience developing and integrating complex systems spanning optical and electronic hardware, firmware, software, and data acquisition.
- Experience collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines and teams;
- Hands-on experience designing, characterizing, or calibrating electro-optic devices and systems.
- Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear requirements, models, or system frameworks.
- Experience working across optical/electronic hardware, firmware, and software interfaces.
- Strong system-level problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
Preferred:
- Experience with integrated photonics, RF systems, or high-speed optical switching.
- Experience developing or scaling calibration procedures for complex experimental or production systems where scalability and high reliability are important.
- Experience with system-level modeling, uptime analysis, or performance optimization;
- Track record of leading cross-functional technical efforts or driving alignment across teams.
- Experience documenting system architectures, experimental processes, or hardware designs in a structured and scalable manner.
- Demonstrated interest in quantum computing or related advanced technologies.

- Zone 1, Bay Area and NYC: $182,200 to $214,100
- Zone 2, including Los Angeles and Washington, DC: $164,000 to $192,700
- Zone 3, including Austin, Chicago, and Sacramento: $145,800 to $171,300
- Zone 4, including Nashville, Phoenix/Tempe, and many remote locations: $127,600 to $149,900
