Job Description
Job Title: Quantum Engineer. Location: Berkeley, CA or Fremont, CA
This position is suitable for experimental physicists exploring topics such as gate calibration, qubit relaxation and dephasing, small processor research, large processor integration, or quantum error correction implementation.
Responsibilities:
- Characterize experimental devices, assess performance, identify improvement areas, and provide feedback to internal teams.
- Lead and provide technical focus on specific R&D topics, including gate calibration, qubit relaxation/dephasing, piloting new research ideas, integration of innovations into large processors, or implementation of quantum error correction;
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams (fabrication, design, electronics, software) to turn experimental concepts into robust, scalable technologies.
- Stay up to date with cutting-edge research, synthesize results from literature, and implement state-of-the-art calibration, error diagnostics, and system optimization techniques.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Physics or a similar applied scientific field, or Master’s in Physics with 2+ years of relevant industry experience.
- Proven abilities in experimental problem-solving and research.
- Expertise in implementing coherent quantum effects and control.
- Proficiency in Python for scientific applications;
- Strong collaboration skills with a team-first mindset.
- Excellent communication skills.
Preferred:
- Experience calibrating and characterizing single- and two-qubit gates in superconducting quantum devices.
- Experience with quantum simulation frameworks such as QuTip.
- Demonstrated ability to execute and communicate outcomes from innovative R&D initiatives.
- Software development experience in collaborative industry settings;
- Prior technical role in industrial or startup environments.
