Senior Atomic Physicist

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Atomic Physicist. Location: Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize optical signal chains for long-range quantum networks and modular quantum computing.
  • Evaluate and harden components of the optical signal chain for autonomous operation and scalable production.
  • Conduct prototype experiments to calibrate, benchmark, and maintain optical setups.
  • Compare variations of signal chains by analyzing signal losses, stability, and scalability;
  • Coordinate development of subcomponents with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to build systems that rapidly process and store quantum information from photons.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience in quantum optics and quantum computing, ideally with single photons.
  • Skilled in designing and testing complex opto-mechanical and opto-electronic setups, including acousto-optical and electro-optical modulators for intensity and frequency feedback loops;
  • Experience developing automated routines for hardware and software calibration and maintenance.

Preferred:

  • Experience with optically-mediated entanglement protocols between qubits.
  • Experience in quantum frequency conversion;
  • Proficiency in lab software development, preferably using Python.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Base salary range: $126,887 – $166,127.
  • Total compensation includes base salary, variable bonus, and equity.
  • Benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, 401K matching, unlimited PTO, paid holidays, parental/adoption leave, legal insurance, home internet stipend, and pet insurance.

Other Information:

  • Occasional domestic travel: 1–4 times per year.
  • IonQ’s HQ is in College Park, Maryland, with manufacturing facilities in Bothell, WA. Candidates may be required to work near offices in College Park, Seattle, Toronto (Canada), or Basel (Switzerland);
  • Employment contingent on U.S. person status or obtaining necessary licenses for export-controlled technology.
