Job Title: Senior Quantum Measurement Engineer. Location: West Lafayette, Indiana, USA
Responsibilities:
- Perform advanced measurement techniques to support the development of quantum devices and measurement practices.
- Develop, optimize, and execute low-temperature electrical characterization of mesoscopic semiconductor and superconductor devices.
- Characterize quantum materials and devices to improve qubit performance and scalability.
- Identify opportunities to streamline and automate quantum measurement processes.
- Develop hypotheses and design experiments to test them;
- Analyze experimental results and use findings to modify and improve future experiments.
- Work closely with experts in device physics, modeling, fabrication, materials, and characterization.
- Apply technical input from multiple disciplines to experimental work and device development.
- Use AI tools to improve performance modeling, analysis, research, and day-to-day automation.
- Design and build AI agents or copilots to assist with experiment setup, log triage, measurement report generation, protocol templating, and technical knowledge retrieval.
- Contribute to materials and process optimization in an interdisciplinary R&D environment.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field plus 6+ years of industry or R&D experience; or
- Master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field plus 4+ years of industry or R&D experience; or
- Doctorate in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field plus 1+ years of industry or R&D experience; or equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and government security screening requirements;
- Ability to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Ability to satisfy applicable export-control eligibility requirements, including providing citizenship, permanent residency, or other required documentation.
- Ability to use AI tools to drive innovation and efficiency, including performance modeling, analysis, research, and task automation.
- Ability to design and build AI agents or copilots for experimental and technical workflows.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree plus 8+ years of industry or R&D experience; or
- Master's degree plus 6+ years of industry or R&D experience; or
- Doctorate plus 3+ years of industry or R&D experience; or equivalent experience.
- 8+ years of experience with electrical transport measurements in mesoscopic semiconductor or superconductor devices at cryogenic temperatures.
- 8+ years of experience with sub-Kelvin cryogenic systems, such as dilution refrigerators or He3 cryostats.
- 8+ years of Python coding and version control experience, including tools such as Git;
- Experience with superconductor-semiconductor hybrid materials or III/V semiconductors.
- Experience with RF characterization of superconducting resonators.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams focused on materials and process optimization.
Benefits and Compensation:
- Typical U.S. base salary range: $119,800 to $234,700 per year.
- San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area range: $160,200 to $261,000 per year.
- Certain roles may also be eligible for additional benefits and compensation.
- Benefits and pay information is available through Microsoft's corporate pay information.
