Job Description

Job Title: Software Development Engineer II, Centre for Quantum Computing. Location: Pasadena, California, USA

Responsibilities:

• Design and build data lakes and data pipelines that combine experimental, fabrication, and metrology data from different sources into a unified, queryable platform.
• Develop AI-native workflows that automate the experiment, analysis, and recommendation cycle.
• Build workflows that ingest experimental results, run machine learning models, identify insights, and recommend next steps with minimal human intervention.
• Develop LLM-powered tools and autonomous agents that allow researchers to query, visualize, and reason about fabrication and experimental data using natural language;
• Work directly with research scientists, process engineers, and hardware teams to understand their requirements and turn research needs into practical software solutions.
• Implement machine learning analysis systems for applications such as automated defect detection, yield prediction, and process optimization using live fabrication data.
• Design and build recommendation engines that evaluate design-of-experiment tradeoffs involving cost, time, and performance.
• Surface actionable recommendations for research teams based on experimental and fabrication data.
• Own the reliability, scalability, and operational health of developed systems;
• Implement monitoring, alerting, and on-call support for production systems.
• Contribute to the technical direction of the Device Lifecycle team through design documents, architecture reviews, and code reviews.
• Help develop software that supports the scaling of quantum computing technologies, including fabrication execution systems and AI-powered research tools.

Qualifications:

• At least 3 years of professional software development experience, excluding internships.
• At least 2 years of experience designing or architecting new and existing software systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scalability.
• At least 3 years of Object-Oriented Design experience.
• Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
• Experience programming with at least one software programming language.

Preferred:

• 4 or more years of full software development lifecycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Master's degree in Computer Science or an equivalent field.
• Knowledge of machine learning and LLM fundamentals, including transformer architecture, training and inference lifecycles, and optimization techniques.
• Experience with machine learning, data mining, information retrieval, statistics, or natural language processing.
• Research and investigation experience or equivalent skills.
• Experience with semiconductor fabrication, foundry operations, or cleanroom environments.

Benefits and Compensation:

• Base salary range: $143,700 to $194,400 per year.
• Additional compensation may include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs).
