Software Development Engineer Intern - Amazon Cloud

Job Description

Job Title: Software Development Engineer Intern, Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC), Summer 2027. Location: Arlington, VA; Jessup, MD; Seattle, WA; Denver, CO, USA

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with experienced engineers across disciplines to design, build, and operate innovative products and services.
• Participate in technical discussions and contribute to engineering solutions.
• Break down complex and ambiguous problems into well-defined, solvable components.
• Contribute to the design and development of scalable and reliable cloud services and infrastructure.
• Build and maintain tooling and automation supporting Region Reliability Operations across Amazon Dedicated Cloud regions.
• Participate in code reviews, including reviewing and validating AI-generated code.
• Write clean, maintainable code using software development best practices and design patterns;
• Create clear and accurate technical documentation.
• Use generative AI and AI-powered development tools to improve productivity while critically validating their output.
• Work in an agile environment using CI/CD principles.
• Participate in operational responsibilities, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving production issues.
• Demonstrate operational excellence across the lifecycle of software from design through deployment and ongoing operation.
• Collaborate with managers, mentors, and other Amazonians throughout the internship.
• Depending on team placement and interests, contribute to areas such as machine learning, distributed systems, database systems, quantum computing, network development, data engineering, automated reasoning, embedded systems, or computer science.

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related STEM field.
• Experience with at least one general-purpose programming language such as Java, Python, C++, C#, Go, Rust, or TypeScript.
• Experience with data structures, basic algorithm development, and/or object-oriented design principles.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools in an academic or professional setting;
• Expected degree conferral date between October 2027 and September 2029.
• Must have at least one academic quarter, semester, or trimester remaining after the internship.
• Must be available to work 40 hours per week for the 12-week internship.

Preferred:

• Previous technical internship or demonstrated technical project experience.
• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS.
• Experience with SQL or NoSQL database systems.
• Experience using AI tools for development productivity.
• Contributions to open-source projects.
• Experience with version control systems;
• Knowledge of the software development lifecycle, including design, development, testing, building, and deployment.
• Strong problem decomposition, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
• Demonstrated ownership and initiative from design through operation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to learn and adapt quickly to new technologies.

Benefits and Compensation:

• Summer 2027 internships are 12 weeks long, generally beginning in May or June and ending in August.
• Internships are full-time, with a typical schedule of Monday through Friday, up to 40 hours per week.
• Starting annualized pay is $109,395 for the listed locations.

• Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC) provides cloud services in secure, air-gapped environments for government and defense customers.
• The selected candidate must obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph. Amazon will sponsor the appropriate clearance for each government agency for which the candidate performs AWS work.
