Systems Design Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Systems Design Engineer. Location: Milpitas, California, United States

The position involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure systems meet specifications for performance and integration.

Responsibilities:

  • Define design requirements for electro-optic boxes in line with System Architecture specifications.
  • Lead design, development, and qualification of boxes, ensuring they meet functional requirements.
  • Serve as both the box design lead and technical project manager, coordinating across teams.
  • Understand system functionality, PIC and EIC behavior, thermal requirements, and fiber network integration.
  • Define test specifications and work with Build Process and Validation teams to ensure quality;
  • Develop Python scripts to interface with Controls software APIs and lab equipment.
  • Adapt to new technical challenges and continuously develop relevant skills.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the System Design team.

Qualifications:

  • M.S. or PhD in Physics, Optical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of industry experience designing, validating, and testing electro-optic systems.
  • Expertise in cross-functional product development and delivery;
  • Experience designing fiber optic systems and working with photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and fiber networking.
  • Experience with optical test equipment, including power meters, optical backscatter reflectometers (OBR), and optical spectrum analyzers (OSA).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills.
  • Critical thinking, creativity, analytical and detail-oriented problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Preferred:

  • Experience with vacuum systems.
  • Knowledge of optical simulations.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • U.S. Base Pay Range: $160,000 – $180,000 USD
  • Bay Area Pay Range: $183,000 – $200,000 USD
  • Full-time roles are eligible for equity and benefits.
  • Compensation depends on qualifications, experience, and business needs.
