Systems Stability & Sensitivity Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Quantum Systems Stability & Sensitivity Engineer. Location: Redmond, Washington, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, cable, label, and maintain room-temperature electronics racks used for laboratory instrumentation, control, readout, and test infrastructure.
  • Install and configure rack-mounted instruments, power distribution systems, RF hardware, cabling, patch panels, network-connected equipment, and supporting peripherals according to documented procedures.
  • Operate laboratory tools and equipment while following ESD, safety, and basic electronics laboratory practices.
  • Support rack bring-up and first-line debugging of instrumentation, RF signal paths, control hardware, networked equipment, and software-controlled measurement setups;
  • Use Python 3.x scripts, tools, and custom libraries for instrument control, configuration checks, automation, data collection, and troubleshooting.
  • Apply DHCP and networking best practices to assist with network configuration, connectivity checks, addressing issues, and escalation of instrumentation network problems.
  • Work closely with electrical, RF, controls, software, and laboratory operations teams;
  • Support the assembly and maintenance of clean, repeatable room-temperature rack configurations for quantum hardware test environments.
  • Support instrument bring-up, debugging, and laboratory operations for quantum hardware testing.
  • Contribute to Microsoft's culture and values.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; or
  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field plus 2+ years of technical engineering experience; or
  • Equivalent experience;
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.
  • Ability to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Ability to satisfy applicable export-control requirements. Citizenship or eligible residency/protected status may need to be verified to determine access to export-controlled information.

Preferred:

  • Doctorate in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; or
  • Master's degree in a related field plus 3+ years of technical engineering experience; or
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field plus 5+ years of technical engineering experience; or
  • Equivalent experience.
  • Experience working in both corporate and research laboratory environments.
  • At least 1 year of experience in an electronics laboratory;
  • Familiarity with RF hardware, RF cabling, and relevant RF standards or laboratory practices.
  • Strong attention to neatness, detail, aesthetics, cable routing, and visual consistency in rack builds.
  • Familiarity with amplification methods and measurement-chain hardware, including lock-in amplifiers and traveling-wave parametric amplifiers.
  • Experience configuring and debugging networks, particularly for laboratory instrumentation or network-connected test equipment.
  • 2+ years of Python experience in a physics laboratory environment;
  • Experience with Python object-oriented programming, custom libraries, reusable tools, and contemporary coding practices.
  • Familiarity with DHCP and networking best practices for laboratory and instrumentation environments.
  • Ability to support networked instrumentation setup, basic connectivity debugging, and software-assisted configuration checks under engineering guidance.
  • 2+ years of experience using Python 3.x.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Typical U.S. base salary range: $102,100 to $202,200 per year.
  • Base salary range for specific locations in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area: $133,800 to $219,200 per year.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for additional benefits and compensation.
