AMO Physicist, Photonic Interconnect

Job Description

Job Title: Staff AMO Physicist – Photonic Interconnect Development. Location: Remote (USA) or onsite/hybrid at College Park, MD or Bothell, WA

We are hiring a skilled AMO Physicist to help develop high-performance photonic interconnects for linking trapped-ion quantum systems; Your role will be key to designing, testing, and optimizing the connections between quantum processors to enable large-scale quantum networking.

Responsibilities:

• Design interfaces between single trapped ions and single photons for photonic interconnects
• Use quantum optics models to guide experiments and propose new protocols;
• Analyze measurement data (e.g., photon collection, fidelity, noise) to improve design
• Collaborate with architecture teams to set performance goals for integrated components
• Model noise and decoherence sources for fault-tolerant system design
• Document and present findings internally and externally

Qualifications:

• PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, or related field with focus in AMO physics
• 8+ years of relevant experience;
• Strong understanding of quantum optics and light-matter interactions
• Proficient in numerical physics simulations

Preferred:

• 5+ years in quantum information or optics research (academic or industrial)
• Hands-on work with trapped ions or neutral atoms;
• Skilled in high-finesse optical cavities or free-space photon collection
• Experience with laser systems, vacuum tech, and optical instrumentation
• Familiarity with fiber optics and integrated photonics;
• Strong Python programming for experiment control and data analysis
• Excellent problem-solving and team collaboration skills

Compensation & Benefits:

• Base Salary: $141,670 - $185,482
