Job Description

Job Title: Director, Quantum Applications – Energy Use Cases. Location: Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States. Travel: Up to 10% domestic and international

‍Responsibilities:

Design and deliver quantum training programs tailored for diverse audiences in the energy sector—from students to executives.
Develop technical resources including tutorials, hackathon problems, and hybrid algorithm demonstrations;
Lead development of quantum algorithms and hybrid cloud workflows, focusing on energy-related problems.
Grow the Chattanooga office’s innovation ecosystem and mentor junior scientists;
Identify energy-sector challenges and co-develop solutions with internal and external partners.
Represent IonQ at technical conferences, customer engagements, and executive meetings.

Qualifications:

18+ years of professional experience with 15+ years in industry developing real-world computational applications.
At least 5 years leading technical teams.
Deep expertise in quantum algorithms, circuit optimization, and quantum hardware/software integration;
Strategic understanding of quantum applications in the energy sector, including investment and competitive trends.
Proven record of quantum innovation through patents, publications, or commercial deployments;
Strong communication skills with the ability to engage audiences across technical and business domains.

Preferred:

Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field.
5+ years developing and delivering professional training programs;
Hands-on experience in energy-related fields such as power grids, renewable energy, or optimization.
Strong external presence in the quantum field (talks, blogs, public speaking).
Experience with trapped-ion hardware and fault-tolerant quantum systems.
