Research Scientist, Quantum AI

Job Description

Job Title: Research Scientist, Quantum AI. Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

You will work closely with hardware, electronics, and measurement teams while also contributing to the global research community through publications and collaborations.

Responsibilities:

  • Simulate single-qubit and two-qubit gates, as well as qubit readout processes, for superconducting qubit systems.
  • Model realistic environmental noise sources such as thermal noise, flux noise, and charge noise;
  • Incorporate control hardware limitations, including amplitude and timing resolution, bandwidth limits, pulse distortion, and crosstalk.
  • Propose and evaluate new gate and readout methods compatible with Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron (AQFP) control electronics.
  • Collaborate with hardware design and measurement teams to identify error sources that limit quantum processor performance.
  • Develop modeling insights that guide improvements in qubit design and control strategies.
  • Publish research findings in conferences, journals, and public repositories;
  • Contribute to internal research projects and external collaborations with universities and research institutes.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, a related engineering field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in quantum computing.
  • Hands-on experience with superconducting qubits;
  • One or more scientific publications submitted to conferences, journals, or public repositories.

Preferred:

  • Experience with circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED).
  • Knowledge of transmon qubits, fluxonium qubits, and tunable couplers.
  • Experience analyzing flux noise and charge noise;
  • Understanding of two-qubit gate modeling and qubit readout modeling.
  • Experience with collaborative software development.
  • Experience working closely with experimental quantum hardware teams.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Base salary range in the United States: $141,000 to $202,000 per year.
  • Additional compensation includes bonus, equity, and benefits;
  • Final compensation depends on location, skills, experience, and education.
  • Full benefits information is available through Google during the hiring process.

Application Notes: This position is part of Google Quantum AI’s long-term mission to build a scalable, error-corrected quantum computer; Candidates will work on cutting-edge research with real-world impact while contributing to the broader quantum research community.
