Scientist, Applied ML, Error Correction

Job Description

Job Title: Research Scientist, Applied Machine Learning, Quantum Error Correction. Location: Goleta, California, United States

The work will support superconducting qubit systems and high connectivity quantum platforms while addressing challenges such as slower inter chip entangling links and hardware constraints.

This role also involves publishing research results and collaborating with global academic and research institutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop automated discovery pipelines for Quantum Error Correction using machine learning methods
  • Identify and design new quantum error correcting codes that achieve high encoding rate, large distance, or efficient hardware layouts
  • Apply machine learning algorithms to adapt error correction circuits to hardware connectivity constraints
  • Analyze fault tolerant circuits used for syndrome measurement and logical quantum operations;
  • Simulate quantum codes under realistic noise models and evaluate their performance
  • Bridge the gap between theoretical QEC frameworks and practical hardware implementation
  • Optimize error correcting codes for current and next generation quantum processors;
  • Contribute to the scientific community through publications and research collaborations with universities and technical institutes
  • Support internal research initiatives within the Google Quantum AI program

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Quantum Computing, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • At least one scientific publication submission in machine learning or quantum computing in conferences, journals, or public repositories

Preferred:

  • At least one year of experience leading or initiating independent research agendas
  • At least one year of experience working in quantum computing research

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Base salary range: 147,000 USD to 211,000 USD per year
  • Additional compensation may include bonus, equity, and benefits;
  • Compensation depends on role level, experience, location, and relevant education or training
  • Recruiters will provide more specific salary details during the hiring process

  • This is a full time role within the Google Quantum AI team
  • The compensation listed reflects base salary only and does not include bonus, equity, or benefits
