Job Description

Job Title: Staff Scientist – Quantum Chemistry. Location: Bothell, WA; College Park, MD; Remote (US or Switzerland)

Responsibilities:

• Design and implement impactful quantum chemistry algorithms with potential commercial applications.
• Collaborate across compiler, hardware, and cloud teams to develop optimized hybrid quantum workflows;
• Apply your computational chemistry knowledge to evaluate and improve algorithmic strategies;
• Partner with global clients to identify practical quantum use cases and deliver solutions using IonQ’s systems.
• Develop reusable quantum software platforms to support user adoption and application scaling.

Qualifications:

• PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related STEM field (or equivalent experience).
• Proven hands-on experience as a computational chemist with contributions to tools like AFQMC, DFT, MD, or coupled-cluster methods.
• Deep understanding of quantum computing fundamentals including linear algebra, probability, matrix decompositions, and computational complexity.
• Familiarity with hybrid computing models that blend classical and quantum resources.

Preferred:

• Proficiency in Python and Qiskit; working knowledge of C++.
• Experience in developing quantum chemistry algorithms for NISQ-era hardware.
• Strong background in bio/chem/pharma R&D environments;
• Demonstrated ability to work with global teams and clients; international travel possible.
