Lead Fabrication Research Scientist

Job Title: Lead Fabrication Research Scientist. Location: Boston, Massachusetts, United States
Onsite

IonQ is seeking a Lead Fabrication Research Scientist to design, fabricate, and test optical circuits used in quantum systems; This role is part of a cross-functional team focused on scaling fabrication and integrating optical and electronic devices for system-level performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Translate system-level architecture requirements into component-level specifications and design rules
  • Design optical circuits with a focus on performance, fabrication constraints, and interaction with other system components
  • Fabricate and test optical and quantum devices in user facilities;
  • Lead fabrication and testing efforts at foundry scale
  • Develop integration techniques for combining optical and electronic devices
  • Collaborate with internal test and measurement teams to validate device performance
  • Build and maintain relationships with external vendors to scale fabrication and testing
  • Support IonQ’s long-term roadmap for scalable quantum hardware

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field
  • 5 or more years of hands-on experience fabricating optical or quantum devices;
  • Proven experience leading cross-disciplinary teams within large research or engineering projects
  • Strong understanding of device fabrication, testing, and system integration

Preferred:

  • Experience hiring, mentoring, and training research and development teams
  • Knowledge of cryogenic testing and cryogenic system operation
  • Familiarity with distributed quantum computing, sensing, or quantum networking architectures

  • Base salary range: USD 123,191 to 161,289
  • Total compensation includes base salary, performance bonus, and equity

Compensation is based on location, experience, skills, and market data. Salary ranges may change as new market data becomes available.
