Scientist, Superconducting Digital Electronics

Job Description

Job Title: Research Scientist, Superconducting Digital Electronics, Quantum AI. Location: Goleta, CA, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Design and simulate superconductor digital logic circuits, including Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) logic, Adiabatic Quantum Flux Parametron (AQFP) logic, and other emerging families, for qubit control and readout.
  • Develop digital logic systems enabling multiplexed control and readout of qubits;
  • Address challenges in large-scale integration of superconducting electronics such as multi-layer cell design, full-chip clock synchronization, flux trapping, and signal integrity.
  • Collaborate with qubit designers, fabrication engineers, and measurement teams to validate fully integrated quantum processors.
  • Conduct research and publish papers, and present at scientific conferences to advance the field of superconducting digital electronics;
  • Optimize signal integrity, minimize crosstalk, and manage thermal budgets in millikelvin environments to achieve performance metrics for coherent qubit control.
  • Interface with fabrication engineers to define robust IC design standards compatible with superconducting qubits and co-located cryogenic control electronics.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related Engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Research or industry experience in the design and simulation of superconductor digital logic circuits;
  • Experience with at least one superconductor logic family (e.g., RSFQ, ERSFQ, HFQ, RQL, AQFP).
  • At least one published research paper or presentation at a relevant scientific conference.

Preferred:

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years of research or industry experience in superconductor digital circuit design and simulation;
  • Experience with full digital design flow, including RTL, synthesis, verification, timing closure, place-and-route, and post-fabrication validation.
  • Experience with low-temperature measurements of superconductor digital logic circuits.
  • Familiarity with superconducting qubits.
  • Experience using computer-aided design (CAD) and electromagnetic simulation tools.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Base salary range: $141,000–$202,000 per year (plus bonus, equity, and benefits).
  • Comprehensive benefits include health, retirement, and other employee programs.
  • Compensation determined by role, level, location, experience, and education.

Other Information:

  • The role contributes directly to building a fully integrated, modular chip stack combining superconducting qubits and control electronics within a cryogenic environment;
  • Google Quantum AI’s mission is to advance large-scale, error-corrected quantum computing for solving classically intractable problems.
