Job Title: Storage Systems Research Scientist Intern 2027. Location: San Jose, CA, USA
Job Type: Internship, Co-op (Fixed Term), On-site
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on next-generation storage systems for AI and agentic AI.
- Investigate fundamental challenges involving system performance, scalability, and efficiency.
- Develop novel ideas and system designs for AI, systems, and storage research.
- Build prototypes and evaluate their performance at scale.
- Demonstrate the real-world impact of research projects;
- Publish research findings in leading scientific venues.
- Perform system performance measurement, benchmarking, and analysis.
- Design and implement distributed systems and storage systems.
- Work with Linux environments, including system administration and programming.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and researchers across IBM Research.
- Contribute to research at the intersection of high-performance computing, AI, quantum computing, and cloud technologies.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on systems or the intersection of systems and AI.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience with system performance measurement and analysis.
- Programming experience with Python, Go, Bash, or Rust;
- Experience using, administering, and programming in Linux environments.
- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and Git.
- Basic understanding of the Linux storage stack.
- Strong interest in systems research.
Preferred:
- Understanding of LLM technology and distributed inference.
- Familiarity with llm-d, vLLM, and KVCache.
- Experience designing and implementing distributed systems and storage systems.
- Experience with GPU programming.
- Knowledge of high-performance storage systems.
- C++ programming experience.
Benefits and Compensation:
- Projected annualized compensation range of $89,280 to $163,680, depending on skills, experience, and location.
- Eligible Supplemental 1 employees may receive up to 8 paid holidays.
