Job Title: Quantum Demonstration Experimentalist. Location: Yorktown Heights, NY; San Jose, CA; Cambridge, MA, USA
Job Type: Full-Time, Professional, Hybrid
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of novel quantum hardware demonstrations that expand the capabilities of IBM Quantum systems.
- Identify and pursue high-impact experimental opportunities and first-of-a-kind demonstrations.
- Lead cross-functional research with theorists, experimental physicists, software engineers, and hardware engineers.
- Design, execute, and interpret advantage-scale experiments on quantum hardware.
- Apply advanced techniques including error mitigation, dynamic circuits, high-performance computing integration, and quantum error correction.
- Use quantum computing and device physics expertise to identify performance-limiting mechanisms and develop improvements.
- Help shape technical direction across the quantum computing technology stack;
- Identify opportunities to make quantum computing more usable, robust, and scalable.
- Provide technical leadership in a multidisciplinary research environment.
- Communicate research directions and results to technical and executive audiences.
- Mentor other researchers and build alignment across teams.
- Define and lead complex experimental research projects involving multiple technical disciplines.
Qualifications:
- Doctorate degree.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in experimental quantum computing, simulation, or control, including postdoctoral or professional research experience.
- Demonstrated record of independent research and technical achievement.
- Ability to identify important research problems, develop experimental approaches, and drive projects to meaningful results.
- Deep experimental experience with quantum computing systems;
- Experience designing, executing, and interpreting experiments on quantum hardware.
- Strong programming skills, preferably in Python.
- Experience developing research-quality scientific software.
- Ability to lead technical collaborations across experimental physics, theory, software, and hardware engineering.
Preferred:
- Deep understanding of superconducting qubit device physics or comparable quantum hardware architectures.
- Understanding of the relationship between device behavior and system-level performance.
- Experience with quantum control, error suppression, error mitigation, dynamic circuits, or quantum error correction.
- Strong research record demonstrated through publications, technical leadership, or significant experimental results.
- Experience leading complex experimental research projects involving multiple technical disciplines.
- Proficiency with Git/GitHub and collaborative software development practices.
- Experience with Qiskit or similar quantum software development frameworks.

- Projected salary range of $200,000 to $268,000 per year.
