Principal Quantum Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Principal Quantum Engineer. Location: Reston, Virginia, USA

Job Type: Full-Time, Individual Contributor

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and improve quantum devices and supporting systems for scalable quantum computing.
  • Run experiments, simulations, and engineering analysis to evaluate performance and validate designs.
  • Develop measurement techniques to characterize quantum devices, materials, and systems.
  • Analyze experimental and simulation data to guide engineering decisions.
  • Improve device performance through iterative design feedback loops.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, fabrication, and research teams;
  • Document methods, results, and technical findings for reuse across teams.
  • Develop and improve engineering tools, processes, and workflows for quantum R&D.
  • Maintain safety and lab standards, escalating issues when required.
  • Share knowledge through presentations, documentation, and technical discussions.
  • Participate in external engagements such as conferences and collaborations.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Engineering, or related field with 6+ years experience
    OR
  • Master’s degree with 10+ years experience
    OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with 12+ years experience
    OR equivalent industry/research experience
  • Experience in quantum engineering, R&D, or advanced physics-based systems;
  • Ability to pass Microsoft security screening and citizenship verification requirements
  • Ability to work with AI-assisted engineering workflows

Preferred:

  • PhD with 8+ years experience OR equivalent advanced experience levels
  • Strong background in quantum device engineering and system design
  • Experience in experimental physics and measurement systems;
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted research and engineering tools
  • Experience in scalable quantum system development

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Annual salary range: $163,000 – $296,400 (U.S. average range)
  • Higher range possible in certain regions (up to $331,200)
