Job Description
Job Title: Staff Software Engineer (SDK). Location: Bothell, Washington, College Park, Maryland, Remote (United States)
The engineer will collaborate closely with product, application, and systems teams to deliver the best developer experience possible.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, development, and maintenance of high-quality SDK features and capabilities.
- Ensure SDKs are user-friendly, robust, and well-documented to meet both internal and customer needs.
- Collaborate with Product and Application teams to align SDK development with user and business goals.
- Guide and mentor engineers of all levels, maintaining strong standards for code quality and performance;
- Shape long-term technical vision and roadmap for SDK architecture and developer experience;
- Stay updated on quantum computing tools and SDK trends such as Qiskit, Cirq, and other open-source frameworks.
- Participate in on-call rotations to support critical SDK services and integrations.
- Drive cross-team communication and ensure SDKs integrate seamlessly with IonQ’s quantum hardware and cloud platform.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5+ years in SDK development.
- Strong programming experience in Python and system-level languages such as C++ or Rust.
- Proven ability to lead engineering teams and mentor developers;
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including product and scientific teams.
- Solid understanding of SDK performance, architecture, and usability best practices;
- Strong documentation and communication skills.
- Familiarity with quantum SDKs such as Qiskit, Cirq, or PennyLane is preferred.
- Some background or interest in quantum computing or quantum physics is a plus.

- Base salary range: $162,920 to $213,304, depending on location, experience, and skills.
