Staff Data Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Staff Data Engineer. Location: Bothell, Washington, United States

Quantum computers generate massive volumes of data; This data plays a critical role in improving system performance and accelerating progress; IonQ is looking for a Staff Data Engineer to help design and scale the data infrastructure that powers next-generation quantum systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain scalable data pipelines and data warehouses
  • Architect resilient distributed systems to support large-scale data processing
  • Ensure system reliability and data quality through design and code reviews
  • Collaborate closely with experimental and theoretical physics teams;
  • Identify and lead continuous improvements across data platforms and workflows
  • Approach complex problems with practical and simple solutions
  • Mentor team members and support technical growth across the organization

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8 or more years of professional software development experience using Python;
  • 8 or more years of experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Strong experience designing data models and data warehouses
  • Experience with ETL pipelines handling structured and unstructured data
  • Experience working with distributed data processing systems
  • Proficiency with Unix or Linux environments;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field
  • Experience with tools and platforms such as Kubernetes, Postgres, Airflow, Grafana, Apache Iceberg, Superset, Trino or PrestoDB, DBT, Terraform, Segment, InfluxDB, and OpenTelemetry
  • Experience with data governance, including data catalogs and data quality systems
  • Experience with machine learning or deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Keras

  • Base salary range: $162,920 to $213,304 USD
