Job Description
Job Title: AMO Hardware Scientist. Location: Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, USA
The position is ideal for experienced experimental scientists with strong hands-on laboratory expertise in quantum systems and atomic, molecular, and optical physics.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, test, and deploy quantum computing systems using trapped ions as qubits
- Work closely with scientists and engineers to turn new research concepts into working systems
- Operate in a research laboratory environment to collect performance data and characterize quantum devices
- Develop and implement innovative solutions to improve current and next-generation quantum systems;
- Use advanced laboratory techniques such as laser spectroscopy, RF and DC electronics, cryogenic and UHV systems, and computer-controlled experiments
- Present research findings through conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications
Qualifications:
- PhD completed before the start date
- Minimum of 4 or more years of experience, including PhD research, in one or more of the following areas:
- Quantum information science
- Qubits and quantum systems
- Cold atom or trapped ion physics
- Vacuum systems or cryogenics
- Must be a U.S. Person, defined as a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, green card holder, or individual with asylum or refugee status
- Due to U.S. government national security requirements, candidates must not be a People’s Republic of China national or Russian national unless they are also a U.S. citizen
- Ability to work in a safety-sensitive position, including completion of a pre-employment drug test
Preferred:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field
- Strong background in experimental system design and improvement
- Experience programming experimental control systems for data collection, signal processing, and analysis
- Experience with simulation and modeling to guide experimental work;
- Hands-on experience with quantum information processing devices
- Experience in laser cooling and trapping of ions or neutral atoms
- Record of published research and strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in postdoctoral research or mentorship roles
- Strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills
Compensation and Benefits:
- Annual salary range: $124,000 to $170,000
- Actual compensation depends on skills, education, experience, and qualifications
