Job Title: Senior Backend Engineer – Internal Software. Location: Berkeley, CA or Fremont, CA (Remote)

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will lead and maintain data infrastructure and software systems that support experimental physicists and engineers in their daily workflows; This role involves building scalable backend systems in Python, enhancing data platforms, and ensuring platform reliability and clarity for internal users.

Responsibilities:

• Lead improvements to data-intensive backend services and web applications built in Python
• Optimize performance of user-facing workflows across internal applications;
• Ensure data integrity through schema migrations, testing, and robust version control
• Enhance observability and transparency of the internal data platform for all stakeholders
• Communicate service reliability updates, priorities, and roadmaps to users and stakeholders

Qualifications:

• Strong expertise in Python and full software development lifecycle practices
• Proficiency in SQL and relational database management systems (RDBMSs)
• Experience in system architecture or domain modeling;
• Willingness to understand user workflows and evaluate innovative software approaches

Preferred:

• Familiarity with tools such as PostgreSQL, Python REST/RPC frameworks, Kafka, AWS services (e.g., S3, RDS, EKS, MSK), and data platforms like Palantir Foundry
• Experience improving team-wide developer experience;
• Passion for building and maintaining robust data systems

Compensation & Benefits:

• Base Salary: $175,000–$205,000/year (final amount based on experience, skills, and location)
