Data Scientist - Hardware

Job Description

Job Title: Data Scientist – Hardware Development (Internship). Location: Poughkeepsie, New York, United States

Working at IBM means being part of a global team known for innovation, curiosity, and impact; You’ll help design, test, and optimize hardware systems that form the backbone of IBM zSystems, IBM Power Systems, IBM Storage, and IBM Quantum Systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the design, testing, and development of hardware, firmware, and semiconductor components.
  • Support physical design and layout of printed circuit boards and microelectronic systems;
  • Conduct signal integrity, power analysis, and performance modeling for high-performance computing systems.
  • Assist in microelectronics packaging, materials analysis, and mechanical design integration.
  • Work on thermal design, voltage regulation, and power delivery optimizations;
  • Support processor and system validation, test, and characterization activities.
  • Contribute to firmware development and testing, including system-level failure analysis.
  • Collaborate with engineers and researchers across multiple disciplines to advance IBM’s hardware innovations.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or pursuing a Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Optics Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering.

Required Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of hardware design and testing principles
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills;
  • Interest in pursuing a career in engineering or hardware development
  • Growth mindset with curiosity and problem-solving ability

Preferred Skills:

  • Hands-on experience or coursework in hardware systems or semiconductors
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or C++;
  • Experience in interdisciplinary projects involving hardware design, verification, or analysis
