Integrated Photonics Intern

Job Description

Job Title: Integrated Photonics Intern – Quantinuum. Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

This internship provides hands-on experience in designing, testing, and packaging integrated photonic components used in next-generation quantum systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, test, and measure integrated photonic components for trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • Collaborate with teams of physicists, engineers, and fabrication specialists to develop new quantum hardware.
  • Validate and improve techniques for photonic chip packaging under specialized technological constraints;
  • Conduct data analysis and present experimental results to the internal team and across departments.
  • Use modeling and simulation tools to evaluate optical waveguide structures and photonic designs.

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in physics, optics, or engineering.
  • Expected graduation date on or after 2026;
  • At least two academic years of university-level coursework in related subjects.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (citizen, permanent resident, or green card holder).
  • Due to national security regulations, applicants cannot be nationals of the People’s Republic of China or Russia unless also U.S. citizens.

Preferred:

  • Practical laboratory experience in optics or photonics.
  • Coursework or project experience in photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design, testing, or packaging.
  • Research experience in integrated photonics or a related field (1.5+ years part-time or 2 full-time summers preferred).
  • Graduate-level research experience (1+ years preferred);
  • Programming experience in Python for data acquisition and analysis.
  • Familiarity with optical modeling tools such as Comsol, Lumerical, RSoft, or Zemax.
  • Ability to perform data-driven experimental work and present findings effectively.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Hourly Rate: $23 – $27 (based on skills, education, and experience).
  • Housing Stipend: Up to $1,000 per month for out-of-state candidates.
