Lab Manager

Job Description

Job Title: Lab Manager. Location: Bothell, Washington, USA and College Park, Maryland, USA

IonQ is building advanced quantum computers based on trapped ion technology; The Lab Manager will guide daily lab operations across two locations and support teams that develop and maintain quantum systems; This role requires strong experience managing technical labs, cleanrooms, and specialized equipment.

Responsibilities:

Lab Operations

  • Capture and manage lab requirements, specifications, and documentation for installing and operating quantum computers
  • Maintain lab equipment schedules, testing plans, and inventory for consumables and spare parts
  • Coordinate repairs, maintenance, and outside contractors;
  • Track and manage equipment calibration with Facilities and EHS teams

Lab Space Planning

  • Develop lab space plans based on input from technical teams
  • Design and maintain lab floorplans
  • Present layout plans to executives when needed;
  • Partner with Facilities to meet service objectives, including 24/7 on-call coverage
  • Lead lab upgrades based on evolving technical needs
  • Own change control for updated documentation

Safety and Compliance

  • Investigate accidents and prepare incident reports
  • Create plans to reduce and prevent lab incidents
  • Establish, update, and enforce lab policies;
  • Benchmark and improve environmental conditions in the lab

Cross Functional Support

  • Support the decommissioning of systems
  • Partner with Facilities, Marketing, and technical teams to host lab tours;
  • Provide future lab space forecasts as part of annual planning

Qualifications:

  • Eight or more years managing advanced optics, laser, chip, or cleanroom labs
  • Five or more years managing contractors or maintenance teams
  • Training in 5S
  • Strong focus on organization and cleanliness

Preferred:

  • Experience working with facilities teams supporting specialized infrastructure such as telecom rooms, data centers, or high performance computing spaces
  • Ability to develop and maintain safety policies under OHS and HSE rules
  • Hands-on skill in building, repairing, and maintaining equipment

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Base salary range: 123,191 to 161,289 USD
  • Total compensation includes base pay, bonus, equity, and benefits
  • US benefits include medical, dental, and vision plans, matching 401K, unlimited PTO, paid holidays, parental and adoption leave, legal insurance, home internet stipend, and pet insurance
  • Compensation may vary based on location, experience, and skills

Location and Travel:

  • Onsite role in College Park, Maryland, or Bothell, Washington
  • Travel under 50 percent initially, then about 25 percent ongoing
