Mechanical Engineer, Cryo/RF

Job Description

Job Title: Lead Mechanical Engineer, Cryo/RF. Location: Berkeley, CA

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the mechanical design of complex subsystems such as cryostat interiors, RF signal chain components, and custom metal enclosures.
  • Develop and maintain 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs);
  • Design thermal anchoring and shielding systems to maintain quantum coherence and mechanical stability from room temperature to millikelvin ranges.
  • Perform thermal, vibrational, and structural simulations using FEA tools;
  • Build and validate cryogenic and mechanical prototypes in the lab;
  • Collaborate with quantum physicists and RF/hardware engineers to ensure integration and performance in real quantum systems.
  • Define specifications for outsourced assemblies such as vacuum flanges and RF housings, and manage supplier relationships.
  • Document assembly procedures and maintain design traceability using PLM systems.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • At least 7 years of experience in mechanical design and systems engineering.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred);
  • Strong knowledge of tolerance analysis and GD&T.
  • Experience in thermal and structural modeling and simulation;
  • Familiarity with PLM systems and documentation control;
  • Excellent cross-disciplinary communication and teamwork skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and document manufacturing and assembly processes.

Preferred:

  • Understanding of cryogenic materials and multi-physics systems.
  • Experience with RF packaging and vacuum or cryogenic environments.
  • Quality assurance experience, including inspection and non-conformance resolution.
  • Hands-on experience in machining or fabrication to support prototyping.
