Job Description
Job Title: Mechanical Engineer II. Location: New Haven, CT, USA
Responsibilities:
- Design, prototype, test, and improve mechanical components and subassemblies for advanced quantum computing systems.
- Develop and maintain CAD models, detailed engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and supporting documentation for prototype builds, design reviews, and production releases.
- Apply mechanical engineering principles, including tolerance analysis, material selection, and Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFA).
- Evaluate thermal design constraints for cryogenic and electromechanical hardware, including coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch, bolted joint performance, heat transfer paths, electronics enclosure cooling, and cryogenic component thermalization;
- Perform engineering analysis using hand calculations, test data, FEA, CFD, and other simulation tools where appropriate.
- Support hands-on assembly, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of prototype and production hardware.
- Document test results, assembly procedures, design revisions, and engineering lessons learned.
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, laboratory teams, and external suppliers to resolve fabrication, assembly, fit, and performance issues.
- Develop practical and reliable mechanical solutions that support next-generation quantum computing hardware.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 3 years of professional experience in mechanical design or mechanical engineering.
- Proven ability to independently manage design projects from concept through design, testing, documentation, and release.
- Experience using professional CAD software for solid modeling;
- Experience creating and interpreting detailed mechanical drawings, including GD&T, tolerances, and fits.
- Proficiency designing machined and sheet metal components.
- Strong hands-on mechanical skills through laboratory work, fabrication, machining, equipment maintenance, or similar experience.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and communicate design assumptions, trade-offs, and results effectively.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and critical thinking skills.
Preferred:
- Experience working with cryogenic, vacuum, or electromechanical systems.
- Knowledge of thermal analysis, FEA, CFD, and simulation-driven mechanical design.
- Experience supporting prototype development, hardware integration, and laboratory testing.
- Familiarity with mechanical design for advanced scientific or quantum hardware environments.
