Microwave Engineer, Quantum Processor

Job Description

Job Title: Microwave Engineer, Quantum Processor Microwave Design. Location: Berkeley, California, USA

You will work closely with fabrication and experimental teams to develop next-generation quantum processors that sit at the core of Rigetti’s technology stack.

Responsibilities:

• Design, lay out, and simulate superconducting microwave integrated circuits for quantum processors
• Optimize on-chip signal delivery, including routing, filtering, and multiplexing;
• Perform full-wave electromagnetic simulations using eigenmode and driven analyses
• Engineer resonant structures and optimize coupling between resonators and on-chip feedlines
• Analyze simulation and experimental results to identify and reduce loss, crosstalk, and unwanted microwave effects
• Collaborate with fabrication and experimental teams on circuit architectures to fabricate and measure;
• Contribute to the design and layout of microwave multi-qubit circuits for fabrication

Qualifications:

• PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent industry experience
• Strong background in microwave engineering, including theory, simulation, and hands-on design
• Experience designing resonant structures and waveguides;
• Hands-on experience with commercial electromagnetic solvers such as HFSS, COMSOL, or CST
• Solid mathematical foundation, including linear algebra and numerical methods
• Programming experience in Python for scientific or engineering applications
• Strong written and verbal communication skills;
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment

Nice to Have:

• Experience with 2D CAD tools for integrated circuit layout
• Familiarity with GDS file format and automated layout tools such as gdspy
• Understanding of quantum mechanics or circuit quantum electrodynamics
• Contributions to open-source software projects;
• Knowledge of semiconductor fabrication processes
• Prior experience in a startup or industry engineering role
