Optomechanical Engineer - Optical & RF

Job Description

Job Title: Principal Optomechanical Engineer – Optical and RF Controls. Location: Bothell, WA (Hybrid role with flexible remote work)

In this key leadership role, you’ll work alongside experts in atomic physics, cryogenic systems, optical engineering, and more; Your focus will be on designing, testing, and integrating complex optical & laser hardware systems into IonQ’s quantum computers.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and build optomechanical and laser hardware for advanced electro-opto-mechanical assemblies.
  • Create and analyze theoretical models and simulations for complex optical systems;
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate optical and mechanical systems into product designs.
  • Lead product design efforts, including tolerance analysis, experiments, data analysis, and simulations.
  • Drive design standards, participate in design reviews, and define cross-functional architecture.
  • Support vendors with BOM reviews, documentation, test procedures, and quality control.
  • Mentor junior team members on both technical and career development paths;
  • Act as the subject matter expert for optomechanical systems and stay updated on relevant technologies.
  • Contribute to R&D roadmaps and support transfer from development to manufacturing.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Optical, or related Engineering discipline.
  • 15+ years in optics-based hardware development;
  • 20+ years in product architecture for thermal, mechanical, or optomechanical systems.
  • Strong experience in CAD (PTC CREO or SolidWorks), GD&T, tolerance analysis, and fixture design.
  • Proven track record in developing specifications and alignment processes for optical systems.
  • Experience in precision alignment tools and mechanical/optical systems integration.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and cross-functional communication skills;
  • Deep understanding of design validation and product lifecycle.

Preferred:

  • Master’s or PhD in Mechanical or Optical Engineering.
  • 17+ years of experience in product architecture and optomechanical design;
  • Background in AMO physics, thermal management, and acousto-optic devices.
  • Experience working with suppliers and managing fast-paced technical projects.

Other Information: Travel may be required (up to 20%, domestic and international); Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, permanent residents, or legally admitted refugees/asylees to comply with export control regulations; Role is part of a growing facility in Bothell, WA, with possible collaboration across offices in College Park, Toronto, and Basel.
