Photonics & Optics Intern

Job Description

Job Title: Photonics & Optics Intern. Location: Broomfield, CO – On-site

Responsibilities:

  • Design, simulate, and validate integrated photonic components and optical systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support light delivery and manipulation in trapped ion systems
  • Build and refine experimental setups for photonic integration and validation;
  • Analyze data from experiments and simulations; document and present findings to the team;
  • Assist in modeling optical behavior and system-level interactions

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program (undergraduate or graduate level)
  • Completed at least 2 academic years of coursework in physics, optics, or engineering;
  • Must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or refugee/asylee);
  • Cannot be a national of the People’s Republic of China or Russia unless also a U.S. citizen (due to national security requirements)

Preferred:

  • Hands-on experience with lasers, polarizing optics, optical fibers, imaging systems, and photodetectors
  • Research or lab experience in optics or photonics (1.5+ part-time years or 2 full-time summers);
  • Experience with Python programming for data acquisition or analysis;
  • Exposure to photonic integrated circuits or nonlinear optics in academic or research settings;
  • Familiarity with modeling/simulation tools such as Comsol, Lumerical, RSoft, or Zemax

Compensation:

  • Hourly Pay: $19 – $40
  • Travel reimbursement and housing stipend for eligible non-local candidates
