Job Description

Job Title: Quantum Software Engineer II. Location: Redmond, Washington, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver fast, reliable, and secure software components using Rust, Python, and TypeScript for quantum developer tools.
  • Build and improve language and compiler features for Q#, OpenQASM, QIR, and related quantum technologies.
  • Develop VS Code integrations to improve productivity for scientists and engineers working with quantum systems.
  • Explore and integrate advanced AI capabilities into quantum software development workflows;
  • Collaborate with experts in quantum chemistry, error correction, control systems, and hardware teams to create end-to-end solutions.
  • Contribute to open-source projects hosted on GitHub and engage with the developer community.
  • Triaging issues, improving ecosystem tooling, and supporting quantum research and development workflows.
  • Work in an AI-first development environment using modern AI tools to improve innovation and efficiency.
  • Embody Microsoft culture and values through collaboration, accountability, and innovation.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Physical Sciences, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of programming experience in relevant programming languages.
  • Experience developing commercial software, compilers, scientific computing applications, or multi-component systems.
  • At least 1 year of experience working in collaborative engineering environments;
  • Ability to pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check and other required security screenings.
  • Ability to work with export-controlled information under ITAR, EAR, EU Dual Use Regulation, or related regulations.
  • Ability to leverage AI tools for research, automation, analysis, and development workflows.

Preferred:

  • Doctorate degree in a related field.
  • Additional software industry experience in compilers, simulators, scientific computing, or developer tooling.
  • Experience working with programming languages, compilers, simulators, code editors, or AI integrations.
  • Experience with Rust, Python, HTML, CSS, or web technologies;
  • Knowledge of quantum computing fundamentals and related mathematics such as complex linear algebra.
  • Familiarity with quantum development frameworks including QDK, Qiskit, Cirq, PennyLane, and CUDA-Q.
  • Experience developing GPU-based software.
  • Familiarity with LLVM technologies and intermediate representation (IR).

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Base salary range across the U.S.: $102,100 – $202,200 per year.
  • Higher salary range available for select locations including San Francisco Bay Area and New York City: $133,800 – $219,200 per year.
  • Eligible roles may include additional compensation and employee benefits;
  • Hybrid work arrangement requiring at least 3 days per week in-office.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge quantum computing technologies alongside global research and engineering teams.

Other Information:

  • Travel requirement: Less than 25%.
  • Work arrangement: Hybrid, minimum 60% in-office presence required.
  • Position is part of Microsoft Quantum’s Developer Tools team
  • Most development work is open source and hosted on GitHub;
