Job Title: Research Intern – Quantum Error Correction. Location: Redmond, WA, USA

Job Type: Internship (Research, Hybrid – 3 days/week in-office)

Responsibilities:

• Conduct research in quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing.
• Collaborate with world-class researchers, mentors, and fellow interns on advanced quantum computing challenges.
• Develop and analyze quantum error correction codes, decoding algorithms, and fault-tolerant operations.
• Contribute to theoretical and software tools that accelerate progress in scalable quantum computing.
• Present research findings and actively participate in the research community;
• Engage in knowledge sharing, collaboration, and networking within Microsoft’s research ecosystem.

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related STEM field.
• At least 1 year of experience in quantum error correction and quantum fault-tolerance.
• Ability to work on-site at the assigned Microsoft location during the internship;
• Strong research, analytical, and communication skills.
• Submission of a cover letter, at least two reference letters, and relevant research/work samples required.

Preferred:

• Experience with scientific computing tools such as Python, Julia, or Mathematica.
• Familiarity with quantum error correction libraries such as stim, sinter, pymatching, fusion-blossom, relay-bp, mwpf, and qldpc.
• Strong background in modeling quantum circuits and error correction systems.

Benefits and Compensation:

• Monthly base pay:
  • $6,710 – $13,270 (standard locations)
  • $8,760 – $14,360 (San Francisco Bay Area and New York City)

• Internship duration: typically 12 weeks.
