Job Title: Quantum Algorithm Theorist. Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
Job Type: Professional, Full-Time, Onsite (Research Role)
Responsibilities:
- Design novel and efficient quantum algorithms for scientifically and practically meaningful problems.
- Focus on algorithm development suited for fault-tolerant quantum computers.
- Analyze and rigorously characterize quantum speedups using computational complexity theory.
- Compare quantum approaches against state-of-the-art classical algorithms;
- Collaborate with compiler, error-correction, and hardware research teams to optimize algorithms for early fault-tolerant architectures.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at major conferences.
- Contribute to the broader quantum research community through academic collaboration.
- Help shape the future direction of quantum algorithms research at IBM Research.
Qualifications:
- PhD (completed or near completion) in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field.
- Strong background in quantum information theory and computational complexity.
- Experience in designing and analyzing quantum algorithms;
- Proven record of independent theoretical research contributions.
- Strong foundation in linear algebra and theoretical computer science.
- Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language.
Preferred:
- Strong publication record in high-impact journals or top-tier conferences.
- Experience reviewing or serving on technical program committees.
- Postdoctoral research experience or advanced graduate research in quantum algorithms or complexity theory.
