Senior Cryogenic Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Cryogenic Engineer. Location: Milpitas, California, United States

As part of this mission, PsiQuantum is seeking a Senior Cryogenic Engineer to design, install, & operate advanced cryogenic systems that support quantum computing environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the installation, commissioning, and operation of multiple helium cryoplants and related infrastructure.
  • Optimize helium process control and cryogenic system efficiency.
  • Integrate cryoplants with cryogenic distribution systems and cryostats used in quantum computing;
  • Troubleshoot system issues, including vacuum failures, instrumentation faults, and control logic anomalies.
  • Develop and execute maintenance programs for cryoplants and associated support equipment.
  • Oversee system calibration, leak detection, and vacuum pumping procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance and training for operational teams during startup, maintenance, and fault recovery.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs).
  • Lead development and review of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Conduct HAZOP and operability reviews to ensure safety and reliability;
  • Manage high-performance vacuum systems and perform leak identification and repairs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance system design and performance.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in cryogenic systems, helium refrigeration, or related technologies;
  • Strong hands-on experience in vacuum systems, PLC-based controls, and process instrumentation (pressure, flow, temperature, and vacuum sensors).
  • Proven ability to diagnose and solve complex system issues under pressure.
  • Experience leading commissioning or system integration projects in industrial or scientific facilities.
  • Strong understanding of instrumentation design and control systems;
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with a focus on collaboration.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • U.S. Base Salary Range: $150,000 – $180,000 USD
  • Bay Area Salary Range: $170,000 – $200,000 USD
