Senior Ion Trap Scientist

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Ion Trap Scientist. Location: College Park, Maryland, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Experimentally characterize novel ion traps to enhance scalability and performance
  • Collaborate with design and fabrication teams to prototype and test ion trap architectures
  • Demonstrate new ion trap capabilities aimed at scaling to hundreds of qubits
  • Optimize trap testing tools to improve throughput, stability, and feature development

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Experimental Physics or a related field with expertise in atomic physics
  • 2+ years of post-PhD industry experience (7+ years preferred for senior-level candidates)
  • Hands-on experience with trapped ion or neutral atom systems;
  • Proficiency in areas such as ultracold atomic physics, microfabrication, or numerical simulations of charged particles
  • Familiarity with laser ablation, cryogenic systems, photoionization, or laser cooling;
  • Knowledge of experimental software control and data acquisition tools (e.g., Git, version control systems, time-series databases)
  • Systems engineering background in turning physical prototypes into real-world products

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Base salary range: $107,123 – $140,251, plus performance bonuses and equity
