Photonics Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Photonics Engineer. Location: Palo Alto, California, United States

This position is part of the Photonic Circuits Team, focusing on the design, testing, and optimization of integrated photonic components used in quantum systems; The ideal candidate combines a strong background in optical device design with practical data analysis & technical communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with cross-functional engineering teams to translate thermo-optical device behavior into actionable insights that improve product design.
  • Analyze test data from thermal phase shifters and integrated photonic circuits to identify performance trends, failure modes, and optimization opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation and performance reports on thermo-optical devices;
  • Support design iteration and performance improvements through data-driven recommendations;
  • Collaborate with foundry partners, layout engineers, and system integration teams to ensure accurate design handoff and compliance with performance specifications.
  • Participate in design discussions to align optical design requirements with electrical and mechanical considerations.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • 1–4 years of relevant industry experience in thermo-optical design or integrated photonics.
  • Proven experience analyzing device data and writing clear technical reports;
  • Strong knowledge of silicon photonics fabrication processes and device physics.
  • Proficiency in Python and version control tools such as Git or GitLab.
  • Understanding of electrical design principles, especially Joule heating mechanisms.
  • Excellent communication skills for cross-team collaboration;
  • Preferred: familiarity with mechanical design concepts such as stress and strain analysis or micro-scale suspended structures.
  • A proactive approach and ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Base pay range:
    • Bay Area: $150,000–$170,000 USD
    • Other U.S. Locations: $130,000–$145,000 USD
  • Full-time employees are eligible for equity and a comprehensive benefits package.
  • Flexible hybrid work arrangement (2–3 days remote per week).
