Job Description
Job Title: Photonics Engineer. Location: Palo Alto, California, United States
This position is part of the Photonic Circuits Team, focusing on the design, testing, and optimization of integrated photonic components used in quantum systems; The ideal candidate combines a strong background in optical device design with practical data analysis & technical communication skills.
Responsibilities:
- Work with cross-functional engineering teams to translate thermo-optical device behavior into actionable insights that improve product design.
- Analyze test data from thermal phase shifters and integrated photonic circuits to identify performance trends, failure modes, and optimization opportunities.
- Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation and performance reports on thermo-optical devices;
- Support design iteration and performance improvements through data-driven recommendations;
- Collaborate with foundry partners, layout engineers, and system integration teams to ensure accurate design handoff and compliance with performance specifications.
- Participate in design discussions to align optical design requirements with electrical and mechanical considerations.
Qualifications:
- Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
- 1–4 years of relevant industry experience in thermo-optical design or integrated photonics.
- Proven experience analyzing device data and writing clear technical reports;
- Strong knowledge of silicon photonics fabrication processes and device physics.
- Proficiency in Python and version control tools such as Git or GitLab.
- Understanding of electrical design principles, especially Joule heating mechanisms.
- Excellent communication skills for cross-team collaboration;
- Preferred: familiarity with mechanical design concepts such as stress and strain analysis or micro-scale suspended structures.
- A proactive approach and ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.
Benefits and Compensation:
- Base pay range:
- Bay Area: $150,000–$170,000 USD
- Other U.S. Locations: $130,000–$145,000 USD
- Full-time employees are eligible for equity and a comprehensive benefits package.
- Flexible hybrid work arrangement (2–3 days remote per week).
